As the saying goes, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” And with ball pens, no one can ever refuse its importance. We all have been using the pen from our childhood, but how many of us are exactly aware of its invention or about the history behind its name?
The history of the product dates back to 1880 when John Loud first tried to make an object through which he can write on tanned leather. The object invented by him consisted of a revolving steel ball held in a socket which was used as the writing tip. Though it could be used for writing on leather, its patent expired and disapproved to be used commercially as the writing was coarse and messy.
A journalist named Laszio Jozsef Biro owns the patent of the product. He got annoyed when he had to refill his fountain pen so frequently. Being a journalist by profession, he felt that the ink used for printing newspaper could be easily used in ball pens. Doing so also solved the prolonged issues like smudging or drying of inks. In 1938, Laszio Jozsef Biro finally issued a patent of the product.
Since the product invented by John Loud made the writing coarse and messy, Laszio Jozsef Biro and his brother crafted the design with practicality. They used a reservoir for storing the ink inside the product. This reservoir was sealed to avoid leakage or drying. The thick consistency of the ink was made thinker to make it dry quickly.
Also known as Biro Pens, the product earlier used metals like steel, tungsten carbide, or brass to craft the rotating ball on its tip. Not only did the ball distribute ink at a controlled rate while writing but also prevented the ink from drying. Nowadays, ball pens manufacturer in India works on various techniques to make the product more efficient.
Also known as pressurized pens, space pens do not have a vent at top of the cartridge. This is mainly done to prevent leakage and wastage of ink. Since ballpoint pens rely on gravity, the hole in the top of its cartridge allows air to replace the ink used. In early 1980s Erasable pen was introduced and became quite popular.
